Hello, my name is Vint Cerf. I’m one of the Internet pioneers, but I’d like to talk this morning about another pioneer and the effort that is going on in China.

My good friend, Liu Dong, told me about the idea of kind of Smart City. This (is) completely and totally IPv6 capable. I have to say that this is one of the more exciting visions that I believe could become reality. As we all know, the Internet of Things is fast upon us. Many devices that we normally don’t think has any kind of communication capability would be part of the Internet, whether these are household appliances, things in offices, in cars, things we carry with us, or even things we have on our bodies or even in our bodies, may become part of the Internet communications and environment.

Now let’s imagine that every building, every office, every car, and every city is completely permeated with networking capability. The city will become, well, not quite self-aware, but certainly conscious of all things going on around it, the flows of traffic, the usage of resources, electricity, water and so on. This allows systems to be much more intended to make the city run more efficiently. So I think that you are on the edge of the very exciting development, and I wish I’ll be watching with great interest.

In the meantime, although I can’t be with you today in person, I wish you a really successful conference, and I see you on the Net.
